Google believes it is faster to find an Email by searching. As such, it primarily uses Search Feature instead of Sort to find and categorize the messages of interest. We have already discussed using Search and Filter techniques to view unread mails on web and on Gmail App for Android.
By default, the messages in Gmail are sorted by date i.e. in the order they came into your inbox (newest message first). To Sort Gmail Messages by Sender you can use either Search techniques (Temporary) or Filters and Labels techniques (Permanent).
Quick/Temporary Techniques of Sorting Gmail Messages by Sender
Method 1: Using Search Option to Sort Gmail Messages
Step 1: Log into your Gmail Account. In the Search bar (Top Centre), click on the drop down arrow as shown in the image.
Step 2: In the “From:” field type either the name of sender or Email address of sender and hit search.
Alternatively you can directly type “from:” without quotes suffixed by either the name of sender or Email address of sender into the search bar.
Method 2: Hover over Sender’s Name
Step 1: While in your inbox, simply hover the mouse over the name of any sender you want to see emails from.
Step 2: On the pop up click that appears, click the Emails option. Using this method, Gmail will display the results for mail received from and sent to the sender.
Permanent techniques of sorting Gmail Messages by Sender
Method 3: Create a Label Using Filter
Labels are wonderful way to organize and sort your email messages into categories. They work just like folders.
Step1 : In the Search bar (Top Centre), click on the drop down arrow as shown Method 1 and Search the name/email address of the sender you wish to create label for.
Step 2: Click on “Create Filter with this search”
Step 3: On the pop up Page, tick the box against Apply the Label . In the choose label option, select a New Label, name it and click Create. Check the Also Apply filter to matching conversations and Click on Create Filter
The label will show up on left hand side of your mail box under the Labels tab. You can click it and mails will be sorted by sender
Method 4: Using the quick links Gmail Labs Feature
Quick Links are like mini bookmarks for your Gmail account. Here is how you can do use Quick Links to sort emails in Gmail by sender.
Step 1: Click on Gears Icon > Settings
Step 2: Click on Labs Tab > Type Quick in the Labs Search box and enable the Quick Links feature.
Click on Save Changes at the bottom of page. Your Gmail will refresh to activate the Quick Links feature.
Step 3: Perform a search with your preferred search query as mentioned in Method 1. Once you have the search results Click on Add a Quick Link and name it accordingly
Step 4: Click on Save Changes button. The created Link The label will show up on left hand side of your mail box under the Quick Links tab
Labels and Quick Links are permanent and can be assessed any time. We have not discussed third party applications and extensions to sort your Gmail messages by sender as they can’t be trusted with your data.
